Working with Lavender Essential Oil

Aromatherapy with Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil Basics

Aromatherapy is the practice of using 100% pure plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being. Aromatherapy has been used for an estimated 5000 years or more for the treatment of various conditions.

An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, or simply as the "oil of" the plant from which they were extracted, such as ‘oil of clove’. An oil is "essential" in the sense that it contains the characteristic fragrance of the plant that it is taken from. Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation, often by using steam. Other processes include expression or solvent extraction. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products.

Let’s discuss some hazards of essential oils:

Always consult with a doctor before using essential oils if you have any concerns.

Essential oils should always be kept in a locked, safe place, away from children and pets. Essential oils can kill cats and some are very dangerous for people.

Do not use essential oils directly on the skin unless you are educated on how to safely do so.

Many essential oils are flammable.

Please research an essential oil thouroughly before using it.

Fantasia Crystals has three high quality varieties of Lavender Essential Oil:

French Lavender (lavendula angustifolia) is commonly called True Lavender or English lavender and is grown at higher elevations than other varieties. The species name angustifolia is Latin for 'narrow leaf'. A half-ounce bottle including a dropper or restrictor is $11, although prices do fluctuate.

Uses: This type of Lavender is said to have a strong effect on the mind for many people; possibly helping to balance emotions, reduce stress and anxiety, and creating an environment of emotional stability when used in Aromatherapy.

Spike Lavender (lavendula latifolia) is known as broadleaved lavender or Portuguese lavender. The species name latifolia is Latin for 'broadleaf'.

A half-ounce bottle including a dropper or restrictor is $8, although prices do fluctuate.

Uses: Due to the higher camphor content and strong aroma, many use this variety in Aromatherapy as they believe it can ease coughs and colds, as well as possibly easing stress. Spike Lavender also has a strong impact on the emotional body similar to French Lavender.

40/42 Lavender is a blend of various varieties of aromatic Lavender that is considered to be as close to a ‘standardized’ Lavender Essential Oil that you can find. It is blended to contain 40% linalool and 42% linalyl acetate and will have a similar scent in each batch. Note that some brands actually add synthetic compounds to the blend to keep each batch similar. Our blend is 100% natural and sells for $8 per half-ounce bottle, including a glass dropper or restrictor, although prices do fluctuate.

Uses: This blend is best used for making soaps, bath salts and scented candles to give a reliable scent to your products.
